[News Title] US Chamber Slams NYC’s Public Grocery Plan, Warning of Threat to Local Bodegas

[Anchor] The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has voiced strong opposition to New York City’s plan to open public sector-backed grocery stores. The Chamber warns that taxpayer-subsidized stores could threaten the survival of long-standing small businesses and local bodegas. We have the details from our newsroom.

[Reporter] Neil Bradley, Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, held a press conference outside 103 Deli & Grocery in East Harlem to criticize the city’s plan to launch five public sector-backed grocery stores.

Speaking as part of the Chamber’s national “Free Enterprise Express Opportunity Tour,” Bradley argued that government-run stores—which operate without paying rent, property taxes, or construction overhead while receiving public subsidies—create an unfair playing field for independent retailers.

Bradley warned that if the plan goes forward, local business owners who have dedicated years to serving and employing their communities will be forced out of business. He cautioned that residents could be left with government-controlled stores where bureaucrats decide what products are available on the shelves.

Joining Bradley at the event were local bodega owner Pharsu Ram Panthi and Mark Jaffe of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, both calling for protections for independent merchants.

The U.S. Chamber announced it intends to submit alternative recommendations to the city’s Request for Proposals to help lower food prices for families without relying on government-owned storefronts.
